Dhoni and his fans will probably never forget that date of 31 October 2005 because on this day he played a historic innings against Sri Lanka.
In the year 2005, Sri Lankan team was touring India. In the 7-match ODI series, the Indian team had won the first two matches. The third encounter took place in Jaipur, in which Sri Lanka, playing first, had scored a huge score of 298 runs. Kumar Sangakkara had played an innings of 138 runs in that match. In reply, Team India won the match with 23 balls remaining and took a 3-0 lead in the series.
Historic innings of MS Dhoni
In this match, MS Dhoni created a sensation in international cricket by playing an unbeaten inning of 183 runs. While chasing the target of 299 runs, the Indian team lost the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar early. Dhoni started batting at number three for India in 2005 itself. First he made a partnership of 92 runs with Virender Sehwag. After that, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh and other batsmen kept coming and going, but Dhoni thrashed the Sri Lankan bowlers.
MS Dhoni scored unbeaten 183 runs in 145 balls in that match. In this historic innings he also hit 15 fours and 10 sixes. Through this inning, Dhoni had set a world record for making the highest individual score while chasing. But in the 2011 World Cup, Australia’s Shane Watson broke this record. Watson played an inning of 185 runs in 96 balls against Bangladesh.
