Ashwini Vaishnaw: Indian Railways has announced to build a giant bridge on the Ganga river in Varanasi. This will be the biggest bridge of the Railways so far. Four railway lines and six lane highway will also be built on it. This bridge will replace the 137 year old Malviya Bridge which is currently serving. This proposal has received cabinet approval. The government will spend Rs 2642 crore on this new bridge. The Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Rail-Road Bridge from Varanasi will not only make traveling easier but will also reduce transport costs and carbon emissions. The government claims that this bridge will also save Rs 638 crore annually. Besides, connectivity of many areas will also increase.
Four railway lines and six highway lanes, will be 150 years old
Giving information about this decision, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the foundation of this bridge will be 120 feet deep. Pillars will be built on top of that and a bridge will be built on top of that. This will be the biggest bridge in terms of traffic. There will be four railway lines and six highway lanes on it. The railway line will be below and a 6-lane highway will be built above. This bridge will be built keeping in mind the period of 150 years. A target has been set to complete it in four years. Ashwini Vaishnav said that this bridge will generate employment of about 10 lakh man days during its construction.
