Ricky Ponting on Sachin Tendulkar Most Runs in Test Record: Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has made a big prediction about Joe Root, which has created a stir in the cricket world. Ponting believes that England’s star batsman Joe Root can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of scoring the most runs in Test cricket in the coming years. Ponting said that if Root maintains his current form and hunger to score runs, he can surpass Sachin’s record of 15,921 runs.
Joe Root crossed the 12,000 run mark
Recently Joe Root crossed the 12,000 run mark in the Edgbaston Test against West Indies, becoming the seventh batsman to achieve this feat in Test cricket. So far he has scored 12,027 runs in 143 Test matches at an average of 50.11, which includes 32 centuries and 63 half-centuries.
Root is currently at number seven in the list of highest run-scorers in Test cricket. According to Ponting, he can soon surpass Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara’s 12,400 runs and his former teammate Alastair Cook’s 12,472 runs. Ponting believes that Root has the potential to come close to breaking Tendulkar’s record.
Ponting also said that Root has improved his game in recent years and he has been successful in maintaining consistency. He said – “Four or five years ago, many times he was unable to score a century after scoring 50 runs, but now he is scoring a big century every time after crossing 50. This is his biggest change.”
Sachin Tendulkar has 15,921 runs in 200 Test matches, while Ponting himself is second with 13,378 runs in 168 Test matches. Ponting said in the ‘ICC Review’ – “Root has the ability to do this. He is 33 years old and 3000 runs behind. If he plays 10 to 14 Tests every year and scores 800 to 1,000 runs annually, it may take him 3-4 years. By then he will be 37 years old.”
