Cryptocurrency: A 26-year-old software engineer has been arrested for allegedly embezzling cryptocurrency worth Rs 56 crore from a Bengaluru-based company, police said on Wednesday. The accused hails from Haryana, they said.
The accused had control over all the wallets of the company
Police said that the accused allegedly had access and control over all the wallets of the company, which he misused, changed the account password and later transferred the cryptocurrency to wallets that he had created using fake identities. The matter came to light during the audit of the company.
The accused was absconding for two years
Police said the accused was absconding for the last two years and was arrested from Mumbai. He told that he used to work in this ‘cryptocurrency’ management company based in the city and fled to Mumbai after committing the fraud. Police said in a statement, “During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused had committed fraud by transferring cryptocurrency from the complainant company’s ‘wallet’ to his own wallet, his family members and friends’ wallets, which he had created to transfer the company’s currency between May 2021 and April 2022.”
Two mobile phones and two laptops were also seized
Police said that based on the information received, it was found that the accused was in Mumbai and then he was arrested where he was working in another company. Police said that two mobile phones and two laptops have also been seized from him. They said that he has been taken into police custody so that further investigation can be done in the case and the money can be recovered.
