De Nobrega suffered a serious injury during a cricket match being played at Charles Wearyard Reserve in Perth, after which he had to be admitted to hospital.
This incident happened with Tony de Nobrega when the batsman played a fast straight drive, which went straight into the umpire’s face. After this incident, de Nobrega was immediately taken to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. De Nobrega’s eyes and lips are completely swollen.
The Western Australian Suburban Turf Cricket Association (WASTCA) expressed deep concern over the incident and wished Tony de Nobrega a speedy recovery through a Facebook post. The post read, “Our senior umpire Tony de Nobrega was hit in the face by a sharp straight drive during a third grade match played at Charles Vineyard on Saturday. He was admitted to hospital overnight. Although he did not suffer any broken bones But doctors are monitoring him and we wish him a speedy recovery.
This is not the first time that an umpire has suffered serious injury. In 2019, 80-year-old Welsh umpire John Williams was hit by a ball during a match. He was placed in a coma, but died after a few weeks. Israeli umpire Hillel Oscar also lost his life in 2014 when the ball hit him on the head after hitting the wicket.
