South Africa Boycott Afghanistan Champions Trophy 2025: The Champions Trophy 2025 is now just a few weeks away. Before that, Afghanistan cricket team has come under the scanner. First, there has been a demand from England and now from South Africa to boycott the match against Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy. In fact, South African Government Sports Minister Gaetan McKenzie has requested his team not to play the match against Afghanistan. All this is happening because after the return of the Taliban government in 2021, women were banned from playing cricket or any other sport.
McKenzie said, “I want to make it clear that the ICC has an equal vision towards everyone. It also tries to emphasize on men’s and women’s cricket in all the countries, but this is not happening in Afghanistan. It is clear from this that It turns out that there is political interference taking place within the sports administration, in a similar case Sri Lanka had to face a ban in the year 2023.
Boycott the match against Afghanistan…
McKenzie further said in his statement, “I know that the ICC follows the rule that there should be no political interference in sports in any way. I am the Sports Minister, but it is not in my power to take this decision. Whether South Africa should play matches against Afghanistan in future or not.” He also expressed the hope that boycotting the match against Afghanistan will probably send a good message towards women empowerment in the world.
Earlier, 160 MPs of England had written a letter to the ECB, in which a demand was made to boycott the Champions Trophy match against Afghanistan citing violation of women’s rights. This demand was rejected by the ECB saying that nothing will be done by one board raising its voice in this matter, rather everyone will have to come together.
