According to the mythological story related to Utpanna Ekadashi, in Satyayuga there was a demon named Nadijangha whose son was named Mur. The demon’s son Mur was very brave and strong. He had taken over the places of Indra, Varun, Yama, Agni, Vayu, Ish, Moon, Nairit etc. Everyone was defeated by him in the war and in the end everyone took refuge in Kailashpati Shiva. Lord Shiva sent the gods to Lord Vishnu for the solution of the problem.
Then Lord Vishnu reached the battlefield to save the gods from the demon Mur and fought with Mur and his armies. This war between Lord Vishnu and Mur lasted for 10 thousand years. Even after Mur was disintegrated, he was not defeated and did not die.

Lord Vishnu was also completely tired while fighting and he went and hid in the Badrikashram cave to take rest but Mur reached there also. Seeing Sri Hari resting, just as the peacock was about to attack him, a goddess with radiant form appeared from the body of Lord Vishnu and killed the peacock. Lord Vishnu woke up and said, Devi, you were born from my body on the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month. Therefore your name will be Ekadashi and you will also be worshiped on this day.
