Officers serving as Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) come under the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). The initial appointment of an SDM is usually through the State Civil Services Examination. When a person serves as an SDM, he has various administrative responsibilities, such as maintaining law and order, revenue administration and conducting development programs.

- Generally an SDM can reach the following posts during his service.
- Assistant Collector: This is the initial level, where SDM gets the opportunity to play an important role in the district administration.
- Collector: If an SDM shows excellence in his services and gains experience, he can be promoted to the post of Collector. The Collector is the head of administration at the district level.
- District Magistrate: This is a higher post, in which the officer has to conduct the administrative activities of the entire district.
- Additional Secretary or Secretary: Some officers may also be appointed as Additional Secretaries or Secretaries in the state government, which are the highest level administrative roles.

Even after retirement, many former SDMs may be given important roles in various commissions, tribunals or public sector boards. For example, they can also be appointed to constitutional posts like Governor or Lieutenant Governor. Thus, an SDM can reach many important and prestigious positions during his career and continue to serve in respected roles even after retirement.
