The Union Cabinet has approved the appointment of Sanjay Malhotra as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and currently Revenue Secretary, will assume charge on December 11, 2024. The tenure of the RBI Governor is usually three years. Sanjay Malhotra will replace Shaktikanta Das in this role, whose tenure is ending on December 10, 2024.

Sanjay Malhotra is a 1990 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre. He has studied engineering in computer science from IIT, Kanpur and has a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University. Presently he is working as Revenue Secretary in the Finance Ministry. Before this he was holding the post of Secretary, Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance.
