Basit Ali On Ravichandran Ashwin: Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been in the news since his retirement. Ashwin announced his retirement after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy played at Gabba. Now after the retirement of the Indian spinner, a shocking statement came from across the border i.e. Pakistan, in which it was said that Ashwin is not a match winner.
Former Pakistan batsman Basit Ali talked about Ashwin’s retirement. He said that Ashwin is not a match winner, but he is a series winner. The former Pakistan batsman said that head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma should have ensured that Ashwin announces his retirement after the series.
While talking on YouTube channel, Ashwin said, “Do you know when Ashwin should have taken retirement? Either when Sundar was called for the second Test match against New Zealand, after that series. Or after this five Test match.” Would have taken later. Bad decision by Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, should have convinced him that you are needed in two Test matches and there will be a real need in Sydney.
Basit Ali further said, “Is Ashwin a match winner? No, Ashwin is not a match winner, Ashwin is a series winner. He has won the series. If someone plays an innings in T20, then it is said that the match winner has arrived. The one who wins the tournament.” Players are different and the player who wins the series is different, especially in India, winning a match by scoring 35 runs in 15 balls is a different thing.
The former Pakistan batsman further said, “Top cricket is red ball cricket. Harbhajan is done, Anil Kumble is done, Ashwin is done, these were series winners.”
