PMAY-G: Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural), the aim of the Central Government is to empower the women living in villages. In the second phase of this scheme, a target has been set to give 100 percent ownership to women in the houses given in rural areas. Apart from this, a new survey ‘Awas-Plus 2024’ is being launched under which the beneficiaries will have to undergo the survey as per the updated criteria for new houses. It is the effort of the government that in the second phase, registration of registered houses should be done only in the name of female members of the beneficiary families.
According to the report of Economic Times, a new list of beneficiaries will be made and through this, for the first time, people willing to enroll in this scheme will be allowed to do ‘self survey’. After the Central Government approved the construction of two crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), now preparations for starting its second phase have almost been completed.
What is the participation of women in the current first phase?
At present, 74 percent of the houses being built under PMAY-G are owned by women, either singly or jointly.
What will be special in the second phase?
According to a source in the Rural Development Ministry, to maintain transparency, ‘facial recognition’ technology will be used for all first-time survey takers and those being surveyed. Along with this, the official source said that this time the eligibility criteria for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin has been relaxed and some limitations have been removed. New surveys will be conducted through ‘Awas Plus App’.
What is the timeline for the second phase of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Rural?
Many states of the country have been directed to complete the Housing-Plus 2024 survey by November 30 and approve houses for eligible families by December 31. The construction of these houses is expected to be completed within a year.
According to the Ministry of Rural Development, 2.67 crore houses have been built under PMAY-G since the launch of the scheme in 2016. Under the Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana, the construction of about 77 lakh pending houses has also been completed. PMAY-G was launched in 2016 and had a target of constructing 2.95 crore pucca houses in five years.
