Parliament Monsoon Session 2024 K. Chidambaram on Hosting Olympics: 117 athletes from India have gone to Paris Olympics 2024 to win medals by showing their strong game, in which the countrymen have hopes of medals from many athletes. This is the reason why many news related to Olympics are being heard in India in recent times. In such a situation, on 22 July 2024, a press release has been issued by the Ministry of Sports and Youth, Government of India, in which it was told that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has started the process of negotiation with the Future Host Commission (FHC). This conversation is being done regarding hosting the Olympics 2036.
In such a situation, India’s preparations for the Paris Olympics were being discussed during the Monsoon Session of Parliament 2024. Then Congress MP Karti Chidambaram on Monday urged the government in the Lok Sabha not to propose hosting the Olympics, as it would put a huge burden on the country’s resources. While discussing India’s preparations for the Olympics, he said that this money should be used for the development of athletes, and not on “egoistic” projects.
Karti Chidambaram said- “Please do not host the Olympics. Greece and Brazil organized the Olympics and faced serious difficulties after that. It is a big burden.” He also pointed out that India has won a total of 35 medals in all the Olympics so far, while a small country like Croatia has won 41 medals. He suggested that the government should focus on wide participation in sports and increasing access to sports facilities.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said, “Sports should be made a compulsory subject in board exams and participation in sports should be compulsory. Unless sports are made compulsory in this exam-oriented education system, it is very difficult to make sports widespread.” He said that many schools do not have playgrounds and such schools should not be recognized. He further said, “If we do these two things, sports will become widespread.”
