Narayan Murthy, co-founder of the country’s second largest company Infosys and one of the top entrepreneurs, has talked about the biggest challenge facing India. While many economists and economists talk about demographic dividend in India’s favour, Murthy believes that the rapidly increasing population is the biggest challenge for the country’s sustainability.
Nobody paid attention after the emergency
Narayan Murthy made this comment on the population problem in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. He was addressing the convocation ceremony of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Prayagraj. Murthy, the chief guest of the ceremony, said that after the Emergency in the country, no one paid attention to the population problem and now due to that the future of the country is in danger.
The situation is getting worse on these fronts
According to the Infosys co-founder, India is facing many serious challenges due to population. For example, availability of land per person, healthcare facilities etc. Countries like America, Brazil and China have more land availability per person compared to India. In India, we did not pay attention to this problem after the Emergency, which has become a threat to the sustainability of the country.
India has overtaken China in population
Narayan Murthy’s comment has come at a time when India has now become the most populous country in the world. For a long time, China was the most populous country in the world, but now India has overtaken it. According to the United Nations’ estimate, India’s population is more than 1.44 crore, while China’s population is estimated to be 1.42 crore.
Many experts have been saying that it is good for the economy
Murthy’s comment becomes relevant in this regard also, because his opinion is different from many economists and experts. Many experts have been calling India’s growing population a boon rather than a problem. Calling it a demographic dividend for India, it has been said that due to this cheap human labour is available to India, which is positive for moving the economy forward.
Objection to comparison with China
However, Murthy objects to this as well. He says – it is too early to call India a hub or a global leader. China has already become the world’s factory. About 90 percent of the goods sold in supermarkets and home depots of other countries are being made in China. The size of their economy is 6 times that of India. It is a great audacity to say that India will become a hub of manufacturing.
