Sri Lanka Cricket Team Performance: The last ICC trophy won by the Sri Lankan cricket team was in 2014. That year Sri Lanka became the T20 World Cup winner, but after that this team has been struggling in all three formats of cricket. It was a big failure of the team to finish ninth in the 2023 ODI World Cup and then not reach the Super-8 of the T20 World Cup 2024. In such a situation, Mahela Jayawardene resigned from the post of consultant coach under pressure. But within the last 2 months, the Sri Lankan team has troubled not only the teams of Asia but also other teams of the world.
In such a situation, on July 8, 2024, veteran cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya was appointed the interim coach of the Sri Lankan team. He got this responsibility till the end of September, but whether he will remain the coach further or not. This decision will be in the hands of the board. But it is certain that after Jayasuriya became the coach, Sri Lanka has created problems for India, England and then New Zealand as well.
Sri Lankan team became a star overnight
Sanath Jayasuriya took over the responsibility of interim coach during the Indian team’s tour of Sri Lanka. However, India had wiped out Sri Lanka by defeating it 3-0 in the T20 series. But when the Sri Lankan team won 2-0 in the ODI series, Jayasuriya standing in the dugout was filled with joy.
After that, even though he had to lose the Test series against England by 2-1, he stunned England in the third Test match of the series. For the first time in the last 10 years, Sri Lanka was successful in defeating England in a Test match on its own soil. Now, under the coaching of Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand by 63 runs in the first test match and is now close to registering a big win in the second match as well. It would not be wrong to say that some time ago, Pakistan was considered India’s arch rival in Asia, now that status is passing to Sri Lanka.
