Jagmohan Dalmiya Changed History of Indian Cricket: Cricket has been played in India for a very long time and when the first ODI match in history was played in 1971, the game of cricket also needed changes. Actually, England had dominated cricket for a very long time, but in the meantime, Jagmohan Dalmiya joined the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 1979. Dalmiya started bringing big changes in the cricket process in India and later he also became the President of BCCI.
India stunned the cricket world by winning the World Cup in 1983 against teams like West Indies, England and Australia. At that time, Jagmohan Dalmiya believed that this game could gain a lot of popularity in India and start a new movement in the country. That is why Dalmiya made every effort to get India the hosting rights of the 1987 World Cup. Ultimately his efforts were successful and the 1987 World Cup was jointly hosted by India and Pakistan.
Dhirubhai Ambani also supported
Dhirubhai Ambani openly supported these efforts of Jagmohan Dalmiya. It was Ambani who sponsored the 1987 World Cup. Ambani also knew that a lot of money can be earned through cricket in India. Earlier, the situation was such that BCCI used to pay Rs 5 lakh to Doordarshan for broadcasting the matches of Team India.
But Dalmiya’s new thinking started bringing about a change in cricket because he started selling broadcasting rights for Team India’s matches to private channels. This was during the 1996 World Cup when BCCI earned 10 million dollars by selling broadcasting rights. Money started pouring into Indian cricket, a lot of credit for this goes to Jagmohan Dalmiya and Indian cricketers also started benefiting from his strategies.
