Airtel Jio Starlink Deal Once Opposed Now Ready to Join Hands Who Starlink is Necessary for Jio and Airtel

Airtel-jio starlink deal: A major change is coming in India’s digital ecosystem. Reliance’s Jio Platforms have joined hands with Elon Musk’s company Spacex, so that Starlink’s satellite internet services can be launched in India. Apart from this, Airtel also reached an agreement with Starlink on Tuesday. Now the question arises that what is the compulsion that both companies who were once opposing Starlink in India are now coming forward to do business with it.

Starlink was opposed

Starlink was trying to enter the Indian market since October 2022. However, telecom giants like Jio and Airtel initially opposed it. In fact, the Government of India had decided to allocate spectrum for satellite broadband services, about which Jio and Airtel’s opinion was different. Jio advocated the auction for spectrum allocation. The government, following global practice, decided to allocate the spectrum in an administrative manner.

Whereas in 2024, Airtel Chairman Sunil Mittal said that satellite companies should also buy spectrum like telecom companies and pay license fees. Jio also supported this. On this, Elon Musk had said whether it would be “very difficult” for Starlink to seek permission to operate in India.

Jio and Airtel tied up with Starlink

Despite the initial opposition, now both Jio and Airtel have partnered with Starlink. Jio’s announcement has come after Airtel, which had already compromised with Spacex. This step also indicates terrible competition in the field of satellite internet between the two telecom companies.

Why Starlink is necessary for both companies

This agreement with Jio and Airte’s spacex will help in delivering high-speed broadband services to rural and remote areas of India. Jio, which is the world’s largest mobile operator company in terms of data traffic and will further strengthen India’s digital ecosystem with Starlink, which specializes in low meaning orbit satellite technology.

At the same time, Airtel’s managing director Gopal Vitthal has described this partnership as a big milestone. He said that this agreement would give Airtel and Spacex a chance to find new possibilities in the Indian market. Let me tell you, this announcement has come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to America and Elon Musk. It is clear that the Government of India is also committed to promoting satellite internet services in the country.

What will be the next step?

Now everyone’s eyes are on Spacex, which is waiting for the necessary approval from the Government of India. Once permission is received, Starlink can launch its services in India. This will increase the reach of high-speed internet not only in urban but also in rural areas.

How does satellite internet work?

Satellite internet is based on three things. First, satellite second ground station and third user device. Satellite is the most important part of this internet system. These satellites are present in the Earth’s orbit and transfer the data coming from your device. The old systems used to work in Geostationary Orbit (GEO), but new technologys like Starlink and Kuper are working in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which increases the speed of the Internet and reduces the delay.

Now come to the ground station. The ground station i.e. “Gateway” works to send internet data to satellite and from there. They are directly connected to internet infrastructure and help in transporting data to the right place.

User Equipment is also very important for this facility. Actually, to use the Internet, you will need a satellite antenna (dish), a transvier and modem. This system connects your internet device to satellite and keeps you online.
