R Ashwin Tweet on Harmanpreet-Amelia Controversy: The Indian women’s cricket team started its campaign in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in a controversial and disappointing manner. In this match held in Dubai, India was facing New Zealand. In which India had to face defeat by 58 runs. In this match, there was a dispute between Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur and the field umpire during New Zealand’s batting. On which Indian men’s cricket team all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin tweeted. But after some time he also deleted that tweet.
Why did there be a dispute between Harmanpreet and the field umpire?
The biggest controversy of this match occurred when an appeal was made to run out New Zealand batsman Amelia Kerr, but the umpires declared her not out. After this incident, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur had a heated argument with the umpires.
This incident happened on the last ball of the 14th over. Amelia Kerr played Deepti Sharma’s ball towards long off and ran for runs. But Harmanpreet, while fielding, immediately threw the ball towards wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh and Kerr was run out. By then the umpire had given the signal for dead ball. After this Kerr was declared not out. This decision created controversy in the game, which also sparked debate on social media.
Ashwin deleted his tweet related to this controversy
This controversy has raised questions on the credibility of the rules of the game. Experienced all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin also expressed his concern by tweeting on this issue, but later he deleted his tweet. He wrote, “The over was ended before the start of the second run. Whose fault is it really?”
What does the dead ball rule say?
According to Law 20 of Cricket, “The ball shall be considered ‘dead’ only when it is clear that the fielding side and both batsmen have stopped play.” In this situation, both the teams were continuing the game, due to which the umpires’ decision of calling it dead ball has come under question.
