what is the hymen
The thin membrane on the vulva of the vagina is called the hymen. It is made of soft tissue and covers the vulva. Its structure is similar to that of the vagina. It is believed that the hymen breaks when the vagina is penetrated. When having sex for the first time, blood may or may not come out of the vagina. There can be many other reasons for blood flow from the vagina during sex. These include not being fully ready for sex, any kind of stress in the mind or infection.
Myth: The hymen keeps the vagina’s mouth, i.e. the vulva, completely closed
Fact : This is the biggest misconception, because if the hymen completely closed the mouth of the vagina, then the period blood would not be released. Some girls have this problem. Their vagina is completely covered by the hymen. For which they have to get their vulva opened through surgery.
Myth: The hymen is made only and only for penetration
Fact : It is believed that the hymen is made only for the penis and it ruptures after penetration. But this is not true. The hymen has nothing to do with penetration. Sometimes it expands even after having sex but does not rupture.

Myth: No bleeding during first time sex means the hymen has already opened
Fact According to experts, this is completely wrong, because sometimes the hymen is torn by tampons, sex toys or even fingering. The hymen can also stretch when having sex for the first time, which can cause pain and bleeding. Riding a bike or cycling can also open the hymen. Since it is a delicate membrane, it does not join again once it is torn.
Myth: The hymen breaks only when you have sex for the first time
Fact Experts say that the hymen never breaks. The hymen is a tissue which can be cut, it can expand or go inwards but it cannot break. The estrogen hormone makes the hymen elastic. It can also go inwards after sex. Apart from age, sex and exercise, the hymen expands after pregnancy.
Myth: Hymen is a symbol of virginity
Fact : Hymen does not reveal the virginity of any girl. It is difficult for even a gynecologist to judge someone’s sexual activity by looking at the hymen, therefore one should not get too confused about hymen and virginity and should not have any misconceptions about it.
