The term of the current ICC chairman Greg Barclay will end on November 30. If he wanted, he could have continued as chairman, but on Tuesday he made it clear that he will no longer take up this responsibility. In such a situation, speculation has intensified about BCCI secretary Jay Shah becoming the next chairman.
Whether Jay Shah will take over as the head of ICC or not, it will be clear by August 27. Actually, the last date for filing nomination for the post of ICC chairman is August 27. In such a situation, if Jay Shah files his nomination, then it will be almost certain that he will become the chairman.
The ICC issued a press release saying, “ICC Chairman Greg Barclay has confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down when his current term expires at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the independent Chairman of the ICC in November 2020. He has been re-elected to this position in 2022.”
Let us tell you that according to the rules of ICC, there are 16 votes in the election of the chairman. If more than one candidate stands, then 9 votes are required for majority. ICC said, the current directors will now have to submit nominations for the next chairman by 27 August 2024 and if there are more than one candidates then elections will be held and the term of the new chairman will start from 1 December 2024.
If Jay Shah becomes the chairman of ICC, then he will create history. Actually, Jay Shah will be the youngest ICC chairman, he is just 35 years old. Before Jay Shah, four Indians have been the chairman of ICC. These include Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar.
