Bank employees have been demanding a five-day week for a long time. However, no concrete steps have been taken in this direction so far. Meanwhile, after the SBI Chairman’s comment on Saturday, this issue has once again come into the limelight.
The wait is getting longer
Earlier, the demand for a 5-day work week had gained momentum in early 2024. After that, in the month of March, news came that all the obstacles in the way of a 5-day work week have been removed and now only the approval of the Finance Ministry is awaited. Although more than 4 months have passed since then, but the wait of bank employees for a 5-day week is not ending.
Press Conference after Quarterly Results
On Saturday, Dinesh Khara, chairman of the country’s largest public sector bank SBI, was questioned about this. He was asked what is the update on the demand for a 5-day week being made by bank employees. The SBI chairman avoided answering this question and said that this is not the issue of this meeting. Khara was answering questions from journalists after the announcement of SBI’s first quarter results.
SBI has the highest number of employees
Actually, SBI has the highest number of employees in the bank employees union. The bank employees union had an agreement with the banks’ organization IBA i.e. Indian Bank Association in March. After the agreement, the employees’ union had said that bank employees will not have to wait long for salary hike and holiday on every Saturday of the month like Sunday.
The union made this claim in March
Currently, bank employees get two holidays in two weeks of the month, but in the remaining two weeks they have to work for six days each. Bank employees get holidays on all Sundays as well as second and fourth Saturdays, while they have to work the whole day on first, third and fifth Saturdays like a normal working day. There has been a dispute between the employees’ union and the banks’ union for a long time regarding this.
