India’s first female Olympian was Nilima Ghosh, who participated in the 100 meter sprint and 80 meter hurdles at the 1935 Olympics at the age of just 17. She was eliminated from the competition in the first round itself. Karnam Malleswari was the first female athlete to win a medal in the Olympics, who created history by winning a bronze medal in the weightlifting event at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
