Paris Olympics 2024: Every four years, when the Olympic Games are held, the games are started with the help of a torch during the opening ceremony. A fire is lit through this torch, which keeps burning until the Olympics are over. After the completion of an Olympic Games, this torch is taken to the country where the next Olympics are to be held. In the Paris Olympics, this torch will be brought to the field during the opening ceremony on July 26. But here we are going to tell you about the Olympic torch, its history and the science hidden behind it.
The history of the Olympic torch is very long. It is believed that it started many years ago during the ancient Olympic Games held in Greece. According to Greek mythology, people’s cultural sentiments are attached to this torch. Fire had so much importance there that there is a tradition of lighting torches in temples.
Talking about the modern Olympics, the Olympic torch was first used in 1936. In the olden days, fire was lit inside a torch and a famous athlete would run with it. In 1956, when Ron Clark was running with the torch, his T-shirt got burnt, yet he continued running.
In the year 2000 scientists discovered a new technology
Since there was always a danger of a major incident due to the flames, in the year 2000 scientists designed a new torch which was safer than before. This time scientists had developed a new technology with the help of which the torch was taken underwater for the first time. This new torch was invented by the University of Adelaide in collaboration with the Turbulence Energy Combustion Group and a small company.
This new torch will not stop working in any harsh weather, whether it is stormy or rainy. Although the size of the torch has been increasing or decreasing since the year 2000, the torch has been used based on the same technology ever since.
