WTC Final Qualification Scenario India: India and Australia are tied one each in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. The third Test is being played at the Gabba ground in Brisbane, the first day of which was washed away by rain but on the second day the Kangaroo team has dominated the match. Australia is in a strong position in the Brisbane Test due to centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith. On one hand, Head scored 152 runs, while Smith scored an inning of 101 runs, ending the century drought that had been going on for 18 months. Now the question is that if Team India loses this match, will it have to be out of the race for the World Test Championship final?
Currently, South Africa is on top in the points table of the World Test Championship, whose points percentage is 63.33. Australia remains at second position and India at third position. If all the equations are considered, then only two of these three teams will reach the finals. Sri Lanka is not out yet but its points percentage is 45.45 and its chances of going to the final are negligible.
India loses in Gabba, then what?
With the win at Gabba, the Australian team will not only strengthen its hopes of playing the final but will also take a 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Even if Australia wins the Gabba Test, the Indian team will not be out of the race for the World Test Championship final, but its dependence on other teams for the final will increase.
By winning the Gabba Test, Australia will go ahead 2-1 in the series. In such a situation, India can win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by a maximum margin of 3-2. If India wins the series 3-2, then it will have to hope that at least one match in the upcoming series between Australia and Sri Lanka ends in a draw. After the third Test goes in favor of Australia, a situation of draw of the series 2-2 may also arise. In case of a draw in the India-Australia series, Team India will have to hope that Sri Lanka defeats Australia in the upcoming Test series at any cost.
