Vinesh Phogat defeated Olympic Gold Medalist Paris Olympics 2024: India’s star wrestler Vinesh Phogat has defeated the defending Olympic champion in the first round itself. Vinesh has entered the quarterfinals by defeating Japan’s Yui Susaki, who is also a 4-time world champion, 3-2 in the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling match. Susaki was a gold medalist in the 50 kg category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Indian wrestler Vinesh has raised India’s hopes of winning a gold medal by defeating her in the first round itself.
In this Round of 16 match, Vinesh was trailing 0-2 till the last 10 seconds of the second round, but she showed a tremendous clinch game in the last 5 seconds and collected 3 points. With this, she has won 3-2. This victory of Vinesh Phogat is historic because Yui Susaki did not let any of her opponents score a single point from her first round to the final in the Tokyo Olympics. Japan’s Yui Susaki had lost only three times in her career till date, while Vinesh Phogat has become only the fourth wrestler in history to defeat her.
Vinesh Phogat was on strike
Vinesh Phogat’s career was progressing at a very good pace, but the last one and a half years have been a struggle for her. She was on strike for the last one and a half years because the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had tried to stop her from participating in the Olympic qualifiers. WFI had rejected these allegations saying that Vinesh’s application for coach and physio had come after the last date.
Apart from this, she had also accused former WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh and Sanjay Singh that every possible effort was made to stop her from participating in the Olympics. Vinesh’s troubles did not end here as she was among the 3 famous wrestlers (Vinesh, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik) who staged a sit-in against Brij Bhushan Singh accusing him of sexual harassment.
