Sitharaman has also presented the first paperless budget
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave her first budget in the year 2019. Her budget speech lasted for a full 2 hours and 15 minutes. The very next year, while presenting the budget in 2020, she made the record of India’s longest budget speech. During that time, the Finance Minister spoke for 2 hours 42 minutes. The budget speech of the year 2021 was 1.40 minutes. However, it made the record of being India’s first paperless budget. In the year 2023, Nirmala Sitharaman’s budget speech lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes. After this, in February this year, she gave a speech of 57 minutes during the interim budget.
Jaswant Singh made the record in 2003
Earlier, Jaswant Singh had given a speech of 2 hours and 13 minutes while presenting the budget in the year 2003. He had started universal health insurance and e-filing of income tax returns. Arun Jaitley gave a budget speech of 2 hours and 10 minutes in the year 2014. In this, the tax slab was increased. Also, the defense sector was opened for FDI.
Manmohan Singh spoke the most words
The longest budget speech in terms of words in the history of India was given by Manmohan Singh in the year 1991. He spoke 18,700 words during his speech. Arun Jaitley comes right after him. He gave his budget speech in 18,604 words. The shortest budget of the country was of just 800 words. It was presented by Hirubhai M. Patel in the year 1977. It was an interim budget.
