initial registration
To become an umpire, first of all you have to register with your respective State Cricket Association. For this it is necessary for you to gain experience of umpiring in local matches.
Experience in local matches
You will have to umpire some matches at the local level so that you can gain experience in this field. This experience will help in taking your name forward.
Nomination for BCCI Exam
Once you have gained sufficient experience with your state association, your name will be sent for the Level 1 examination conducted by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).
Coaching and written examination
Three days of coaching classes are conducted by BCCI, followed by a written examination on the fourth day. Candidates who qualify this examination are shortlisted.
induction course
Shortlisted candidates are called for an induction course, where information is given on the rules of the game and other important topics.
practical and oral examination
After completing the induction course, candidates have to face practical and oral examinations. Only if you are successful in these examinations, you are eligible for Level 2 examination.
medical test
After passing the Level 2 exam, you also have to appear for a medical test, in which your physical fitness is checked.
final recognition

Umpire gets this much salary
An umpire’s salary depends on his grade, experience and seniority. Yet according to reports, A+ and A grade umpires in BCCI get Rs 40,000 per day for domestic matches. Whereas, B and C grade umpires get Rs 30,000 per day. If the umpire’s track record is good, he can be included in the ICC panel. Umpires of ICC’s elite panel get Rs 1.50 to 2.20 lakh per match. Their annual salary can be more than Rs 75 lakh.
The umpire gets a salary of 2,500 to 3,000 US dollars for an ODI match. That is, the umpire gets around Rs 2 to 2.5 lakh for an ODI match. In Test matches, ICC umpires get Rs 3,77,567. The salary of umpires in T20 format is around Rs 1,13,270. Umpires also earn a good amount from sponsorship.
