Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti on Wednesday said the telecom regulator will review and strengthen regulations to curb spam calls. Action on spam calls is high on TRAI’s agenda. The regulator is toughening its stand on the issue amid growing complaints from consumers about unsolicited communications from unauthorized telemarketing companies.
This issue was discussed in the meeting
Lahoti said on the occasion of ‘India Satcom-2024’ organised by Broadband India Forum (BIF), “We have had discussions with service providers on spam calls and this is our next priority. We will work seriously… We will remove any loopholes found by people in the existing rules to tighten scrutiny on the issue of spam or spam calls.”
TRAI held a meeting on Tuesday and sent a strong message to service providers and their telemarketers to take effective steps to curb mass communication using voice calls. As a measure, the regulator has sought proactive action from all stakeholders, especially access service providers (telecom companies) and their delivery telemarketers.
this service will be stopped
Immediate action will include implementing technical solutions for identification and preventing ‘multiple calls’ by enterprise customers using 10-digit numbers. Regarding the increasing incidents of fraud and scams through calls and action on them, Lahoti said that a joint committee of regulators is working collectively to address the issue.
TRAI will begin the consultation process in a month to decide the terms, conditions and other modalities for administrative allocation of spectrum for satellite-based telecom services. Lahoti said India’s satellite communications sector is “flourishing” and has the potential to take the country to new heights.
Lahoti said, “Regarding the spectrum requirement of space-based communication, the Telecom Act provides for allotment of spectrum through administrative process for certain satellite-based communication services. The government has sent a reference to TRAI seeking its recommendations on the conditions for allotment of spectrum for certain satellite-based telecommunication services.” TRAI will soon issue a consultation paper on the matter.
