Spam Calls: There has been a 20 percent decline in complaints against spam calls and SMS in October as compared to August. The government has given this information. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the number of complaints against spam calls and SMS in October was 1.51 lakh. In September this figure was 1.63 lakh. This was 13 percent less than in August.
The telecom regulator had issued instructions on August 13 saying that if any organization is found making promotional voice calls in violation of the rules, it will have to face strict consequences. This includes disconnection of all telecom services, blacklisting for up to two years and a ban on allocation of new resources during the period of blacklisting.
TRAI issued guidelines
Following strict instructions from the telecom regulator, TRAI issued instructions on August 20 mandating that all messages from senders/key entities be traceable to recipients from November 1. All telecom companies have implemented technical solutions for this. TRAI said that as a result of these efforts, more than 13,000 Principal Entities (PEs) have already registered their chains with the respective Access Providers, with further registrations continuing at a rapid pace.
Warning notices have been sent by access providers to all those major institutions and registered telemarketers (RTMs) who have not implemented the necessary changes. TRAI further said that all key entities and Telemarketers (TMs) are advised to complete declaration of chain on priority basis as any message which fails to follow the defined Telemarketer Chain will be rejected .
Last month, the government also announced a new spam-tracking system to identify and block international calls to Indian phone numbers.
