The Summer Paralympics 2024 will be held in Paris itself, for which para athletes from all over the world are preparing. There is a bad news for India before this event starting on 28 August. Tokyo Paralympics 2020 gold medalist badminton player Pramod Bhagat has been banned, due to which he will not be able to participate in the Paris Paralympics 2024.
Why was Pramod Bhagat banned?
India’s star para-badminton player Pramod Bhagat has suffered a major setback. He has been excluded from the Paris Paralympics for violating doping rules. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has confirmed this. According to the BWF, Pramod Bhagat did not appear for doping tests several times. Due to this, he has been banned for 18 months. This ban will remain in force till September 1, 2025.
BWF said in its statement, “On 1 March 2024, the CAS Anti-Doping Division ruled that Mr. Bhagat had violated Article 2.4 (Whereabouts) of the BWF Anti-Doping Rules. He failed the ‘Whereabouts’ three times within 12 months, resulting in his disqualification for 18 months. Bhagat appealed against this decision to the CAS Division, but the appeal was rejected on 29 July 2024 and the previous decision has been upheld.”
