TikTok’s troubles are continuously increasing in America. It is already in danger of being banned and now American lawmakers have ordered Apple and Google to remove this app from their respective app stores. Both the companies have been given time till January 19 for this. If this happens then people in America will not be able to download TikTok. However, this decision will not have much impact on existing customers.
Why is there a danger of being banned?
TikTok is owned by Chinese company ByteDance. Now if ByteDance wants to continue its operations in America, it will have to sell it. If it does not sell TikTok to a company from another country by January 19, then it can be banned. America considers TikTok a threat to the safety of citizens. ByteDance has been accused of stealing people’s personal data and giving it to the Chinese government through its app.
What did the American lawmakers write in the letter?
John Moolenaar and Indian-American Raja Krishnamurthy, two MPs from a committee of the US Parliament, wrote letters to Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. In this he said that ByteDance was given enough time to take appropriate steps. Now if it does not follow the law then it will not have the right to access, maintain and update such apps in America. Therefore, Google and Apple need to take necessary steps while respecting the law.
ByteDance is hoping for relief
This letter from American lawmakers has come to light after an American court order. ByteDance has challenged this decision in the Supreme Court. ByteDance hopes that it can get relief from here. If the company does not get relief from here, it will be difficult to do business in America. However, existing users will be able to continue using the app, but they will not get any updates or support.
