Snake Bite Cases: Every year in India, an average of 58,000 people lose their lives due to snake bites. Certainly this figure is worrying. If we look at the figures of deaths all over the world, India has the highest share in the total deaths due to snake bites at 80,000 to 130,000. This is the reason why India is called Snake Bite Capital of the World.
6 people die every hour due to snake bite
According to the Indian Million Dead Study 2020, every hour in India, about 6 people lose their lives due to snake bites. If we talk about snake bite cases, 30 to 40 lakh cases are registered every year. In view of these increasing cases of snake bite, the government has included snake bite in the category of notifiable disease. So why is it important to give information about snake bites to the government? Let us tell you what is the significance of this step of the government and how it can prove helpful.
All those diseases which have a high probability of spreading infection, which result in deaths or which need to be tested as soon as possible to find the right treatment, are added to the list of notifiable diseases. State governments are responsible for issuing notifications. Most states consider infections like tuberculosis, HIV, cholera, malaria, dengue and hepatitis worthy of attention.
Snake bite is so dangerous
We all know that as soon as a snake bites, its secretion starts mixing in the blood and spreads throughout the body. During this time, the nerves start getting damaged due to which the heart and lungs can be paralyzed. If snake bite is not treated on time, the patient may even die. In such a situation, there is a need to give antivenom to the patient to prevent death due to snake bite or to prevent serious physical problems from occurring.

Target set till 2030
You can estimate how poisonous snake venom is from the fact that in June 2017, the World Health Organization had included the venom caused by snakebite in the priority list of Neglected Tropical Diseases. Now the Government of India is setting a target of halving the deaths due to snake bites by the year 2030 through One Health approach.
In fact, inclusion in the list of notifiable diseases will enable proper monitoring of such cases and is also expected to help in determining the exact number of snakebite cases and deaths across India. Using this information, the government will not only try to control the increasing cases of snake bites but will also make arrangements to provide anti-venom in different areas of the country where cases of snake bites are often found.
