Customer Data Leak: Bad news has come out for crores of customers of Star Health and Allied Insurance. It is being claimed that the personal information of about 3.1 crore policyholders of the company has been leaked. These have been made available on Telegram by hackers through chatbot. This data contains sensitive information related to customers. However, Star Health has said that this incident of data theft is not a big one. They are in touch with law enforcement officials regarding this. Recently, Telegram founder Pavel Durov was arrested on charges of promoting crime.
Details like name, mobile number and address of the policyholders are available
Citing a Reuters report, Mint has said that the creator of these chatbots had given information about Star Health’s data to a British security researcher Jason Parker. He gave this information to the security agencies. According to the report, attempts are being made to sell the personal information of policyholders through Telegram. Those making such claims are also providing samples. Reuters has also downloaded them. These contain information about the policyholders’ names, mobile numbers, addresses, tax details, ID cards, test results and medical conditions. On the other hand, the company has said that the customer’s data is safe.
Telegram fails to prevent crimes committed through chatbots
Telegram is one of the biggest messenger apps in the world. It has around 90 crore users. The company is proving unsuccessful in curbing these crimes committed through chatbots. Apart from this, questions are also being raised on the data security of Indian companies. Jason Parker contacted this hacker named Zenzen (xenZen) by posing as a data buyer. Zenzen claims that he has 7.24 terabytes of data. At present it has not been revealed how this data reached that hacker.
