INDW vs SLW Women Asia Cup 2024: Sri Lanka defeated India by 8 wickets in the final of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024. India has missed out on winning the Asia Cup for the eighth time and this is only the second time in history that Team India has lost in the final of the Women’s Asia Cup. India scored 165 runs while playing first in this match, while in response, the Sri Lankan team won by 8 wickets with 8 balls to spare and won the Asia Cup title for the first time. For Sri Lanka, captain Chamari Atapattu and Harshita Samarawickrama played half-century innings and contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s historic victory. Deepti Sharma was the only bowler to take a wicket for India.
Extension of the match
India won the toss and decided to bat first. Opener Smriti Mandhana scored the most runs for India, who contributed 60 runs in 47 balls. However, captain Harmanpreet Kaur could not do anything special, she scored only 11 runs. But in the last 6 overs, Jemima Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh batted in a rapid style and took the team’s score beyond 160 runs. Rodrigues scored 29 runs in 16 balls and Richa Ghosh played a cameo innings of 40 runs in 14 balls, taking India’s score to 165.
The Sri Lankan team, which came out to chase the target, had a very bad start as Vishmi Gunaratne was out after scoring just one run. But after that, there was a great partnership of 87 runs between captain Chamari Atapattu and Harshitha Samarawickrama, but Atapattu was clean bowled by Deepti Sharma on a score of 61 runs. After that, Harshitha remained at the crease from one end and was supported by Kavisha Dilhari, who played a stormy innings of 30 runs in 16 balls. On the other hand, Harshitha made an important contribution in giving Sri Lanka a victory by 8 wickets by playing an innings of 69 runs in 51 balls.
India missed out on the eighth title
The Women’s Asia Cup started in 2004 and its ninth edition was played this year. The Indian team has reached the finals of all the Women’s Asia Cup tournaments held so far, but it has suffered defeat only on one occasion so far. India lost the final to Bangladesh in 2018 and now Sri Lanka has become the second team to defeat India in the Women’s Asia Cup final. In the 2022 final, Team India defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets, but now the Sri Lankan team has taken its revenge by defeating India by the same margin.
