Worship of cradle, not idol (Alop Shankari Mandir Facts)
On Ashtami and Navami of Navratri, Shaktipeeths and Devi temples of Prayagraj have been beautifully decorated. There is no idol in Alop Shakri Shaktipeeth and instead of an idol, a cradle is worshiped there. According to mythology, the little finger of Shivpriya Sati’s right hand fell here in the pond and became invisible. For this reason this Shaktipeeth is known as Alop Shankari.
How did Mother Mahagauri get this name?
According to religious scriptures, when the mother’s complexion had turned black due to severe penance, Lord Shiva was pleased and washed her body with the holy Ganga water. Due to this, the mother’s body became extremely radiant and beautiful, from then onwards the mother was named Mahagauri. Mahagauri wears white clothes and jewellery, hence she is also called Shwetambardhara. Today on Ashtami, Mother Goddess is being worshiped in the form of Mahagauri.
Such is the nature of the goddess
Mahagauri rides on a bull. She has four hands, the upper right hand is in Abhaya Mudra, while the mother holds a trident in the lower hand. The upper left hand holds a damru, while the lower hand remains in Vara Mudra. It is believed that by worshiping Mother Mahagauri all the wishes are fulfilled. This is happening after a long time when Ashtami and Navami are being worshiped on the same day, although devotees will be able to break the fast only tomorrow.
