Glasgow to Host Commonwealth Games 2026: The future of the Commonwealth Games to be held in 2026 seemed to be hanging in the balance. After Australia refused to host the games, Scotland has made a strong entry. Let us remind you that 10 years ago the Commonwealth Games were organized in Glasgow, Scotland and now this city has agreed to host these games again.
Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, while giving information through social media, said that this time fewer games can be seen as compared to the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow in 2014. Let us remind you that earlier the Commonwealth Games were to be held in Victoria, Australia in 2026. But Australia withdrew from hosting the games citing rising costs. Later an investigation revealed that the facts on the basis of which Australia left the hosting were exaggerated.
Financial assistance offered by CGF
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has announced financial assistance to Scotland for hosting the 2026 Games. CGF has provided assistance of Rs 1,104 crore. It is being said that after the amount received from CGF, there will be no need for any financial help from Scotland or the UK government. At the same time, the Commonwealth Federation of Australia has also offered help of Rs 25 crore.
Before Glasgow (Scotland) was finalised, Malaysia’s name had also come up for hosting the Commonwealth Games. It was reported that the federation had offered financial aid of Rs 1,070 crore to this country. But Malaysia rejected the offer saying that there is less time for preparations and also the amount of Rs 1,070 crore was said to be too less for the preparations.
Australia’s withdrawal will obviously have a negative impact on the games. Meanwhile, Malaysia had proposed that it would be better to reduce the number of games and relax the opening and closing ceremonies so that the host country does not have to face any major financial crisis. Now CGF has also reiterated these things in its official statement that the games can be organized on a smaller scale to avoid any financial crisis.
