Sawan Purnima 2024: On the day of Sawan Purnima, people usually know only about Raksha Bandhan festival, but on this day Hayagriva Jayanti (Hayagriva Jayanti 2024) and Upa-karma (changing the sacred thread) also fall. Let us see what our ancient divine texts say.
According to Skanda Purana Shravan Mahatmya Chapter No. 21, in this Shravan month, Utsarjan and Upakarma are performed on the full moon day. The full moon day of Paush and the full moon day of Magh are for Utsarjan ritual or the Pratipada date of Paush or the Pratipada date of Magh is prescribed for Utsarjan ritual or the constellation named Rohini is auspicious for Utsarjan ritual or in other times also, according to their respective sects, it is considered appropriate to perform both Utsarjan and Upakarma together.
Therefore, the Utsartan Kriya is auspicious on the full moon day of Shravan month. Also, for Rigvedis, Shravan Nakshatra should be there for Upkarma. Rigvedis should perform Upkarma on the day when Shravan Nakshatra is there in Chaturdashi, Purnima or Pratipada dates. Upkarma of Yajurvedis should be done on Purnima and Upkarma of Samavedis should be done in Hastanakshatra. Upkarma should be done comfortably during the setting of Venus and Jupiter, but it should not be started earlier in this period, this is the opinion of the scholars of scriptures.
This should be done only after the time polluted by eclipse and Sankranti. Perform the Upkarma on the Panchami Tithi with Hasta Nakshatra or on the Bhadrapad Purnima Tithi. Perform Utsaran and Upkarma according to your Grihyasutra. If Adhik maas comes, it should be done in Shuddha maas. Both these karmas are necessary, hence they should be performed regularly every year.
At the end of the Upkarma, if the Dwijaatis are present, the women should offer Sabhadeep in the assembly. The Acharya should accept that lamp or give it to any other Brahmin. The method of lighting the lamp is told- Fill a kilo of wheat in a vessel of gold, silver or copper and make a lamp of wheat flour and light that lamp in it. That lamp should be filled with ghee or oil and should have three wicks. Offer that lamp to the Brahmin along with Dakshina and Tambul. After worshipping the lamp and the Brahmin in a proper manner, say this mantra-
“Sadakshinah Satambulah Sabhadeepoyamuttamah. Arpito Devdevasya Mam Santu Manoratha. ॥”
Meaning: I have offered this excellent Sabhadeep along with Dakshina and betel leaves to the God, may my wishes be fulfilled.
Hayagriva Jayanti on Sawan Purnima 2024
Hayagriva avatar is said to have taken place on the same date, hence Hayagriva Jayanti should be celebrated on this date. It is said that this festival should be celebrated daily for those who worship him. On the day of Shravan Purnima, in Shravan Nakshatra, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Hayagriva and first of all he sang the Samveda which destroys all sins.
He was born in Shravan Nakshatra at the confluence of Sindhu and Vitasta rivers. Therefore, taking bath there on the day of Shravan fulfils all wishes. On that day, worship Lord Vishnu who holds the bow, discus and mace in a proper manner. After this, listen to the Samgaan. This festival should be celebrated in your country and home as well and Hayagriva should be worshipped and his mantra should be chanted. Listen to that mantra.
In the beginning, the word ‘Pranav’ and after that ‘Namah’ should be added, after that ‘Bhagwate Dharmaya’ should be added and after that also the fourth inflection of the word ‘Atmavishodhanay’ (Atmavishodhanay) should be added. Again, by using the word ‘Namah’ at the end, a mantra of eighteen letters (Om Namo Bhagwate Dharmaya Atmavishodhanaya Namah) is formed. This mantra provides all the achievements and proves the six experiments.
In Kaliyug, its Purashcharana should be done with four times more chanting than this. By doing this, Hayagriva becomes pleased and grants the best desired result. Raksha Bandhan is also celebrated on this full moon day, which removes all diseases and destroys all inauspiciousness.
