Sanath Jayasuriya Head Coach Sri Lanka Contract Extend: The level of the Sri Lankan cricket team was declining year after year. But after Sanath Jayasuriya was appointed the interim coach of the team in July this year, it seemed as if the team started taking a new flight. After first defeating India in the ODI series and now New Zealand in the Test series, the Sri Lankan team has joined the race for the final of the World Test Championship. Amidst this good performance, reports have come out that Sanath Jayasuriya may remain the coach of the Sri Lankan team till next year.
Jayasuriya will remain the coach
According to ESPN Cricinfo, Sri Lanka Cricket Board CEO Ashley de Silva has said that talks are going on with Sanath Jayasuriya regarding extending the contract for the post of head coach. He also said that its official announcement can be made in the next 2-3 days. Sanath Jayasuriya joined the Sri Lankan team as a cricket consultant in December last year. Meanwhile, Chris Silverwood’s tenure had ended in June 2024 i.e. after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. Due to this, the post of head coach of the national team became vacant. After that, in the month of July, Jayasuriya was appointed interim head coach till 30 September.
After Jayasuriya became the coach, Sri Lanka has won the ODI series against India. England tasted defeat at home, although England were victorious 2-1 in that Test series. Now, it is the result of Jayasuriya’s coaching that Sri Lanka has succeeded in defeating New Zealand 2-0 in the Test series. Overall, after the arrival of Sanath Jayasuriya, the team has improved in all three formats. At the same time, the team’s senior player Angelo Mathews has also said that the arrival of Jayasuriya has brought a positive energy inside the team.
