Saleem Khan On Salma Khan: In the documentary ‘Angry Young Men’, Salman Khan’s father and legendary screenwriter Salim Khan has revealed many pages of his life. In this documentary, Salim Khan has also shared many personal stories of his love life and his struggle in Mumbai. During this, he also told how he fell in love with Salman Khan’s mother and his wife Salma Khan.
Salim Khan used to pay 55 rupees as rent for half a room
Revealing his challenges after reaching Mumbai city from Indore, Salim Khan said, he stayed in a guest house on Marine Drive where he paid a nominal rent of Rs 55 per month for half a room. Salim recalled his early days with nostalgia and said, “My first wish was to rent the whole room for Rs 110, but this wish was never fulfilled”
He said, “When I was leaving for Mumbai, my eldest brother told me that there is no need for this, you will come back running. Our lifestyle was comfortable in Indore, but I did not want to ask for money from home, so I had to struggle. This decision of becoming independent started a challenging period in Salim’s life and then he dealt with all the challenges faced in a new city on his own.
How love started between Salim Khan and Salma Khan
During his difficult times, Salim met Salma Khan who was only 17 years old at the time. The 24-year-old Salim would often see Salma from his balcony as she lived near the Reggie House building in Mahim. Their relationship began with a chance exchange of glances which slowly turned into evening meetings in nearby lanes. As their romance deepened, Salma’s family started pressuring her to choose between marrying Salim or someone else. Despite the challenges, the couple got married in 1964 and the very next year welcomed their first son Salman Khan who is a Bollywood superstar today.
Salim Khan also spoke openly about the financial difficulties he faced during this time. He said, “There is always a problem of earning a little income or getting a job – what will happen?” Salim told that to fulfill his needs, he did jobs like cigarette and clothing ads and did whatever was necessary to live life.
How Saleem Khan became a screenwriter from an actor
Despite initial struggles as an actor, Salim soon realized that his real talent lay behind the scenes. He acknowledged his limitations in acting and said, “I can explain a character to actors like Dilip Kumar or Amitabh Bachchan, but I cannot act myself. I had the art of narration and conceiving, but did not know the art of projection.” Then he decided to give up acting and focus on screenwriting. This decision proved to be right and Salim Khan made his mark as a screenwriter in Indian cinema. Today Salim Khan’s son Salman Khan is a Bollywood superstar.
