Retirement of PR Sreejesh: Indian hockey team’s veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has bid farewell to the game with good memories. The bronze medal match played against Spain in Paris Olympics 2024 was the last match of Sreejesh’s career. Team India won the bronze medal by defeating Spain 2-1. Achievements of PR Sreejesh
Sreejesh made his debut for India’s senior hockey team during the 2006 South Asian Games. Since 2011, he has been continuously associated with Team India as a goalkeeper. Talking about his achievements, Sreejesh made a significant contribution in getting gold medals for India in the 2014 and 2022 Asian Games. He also has a silver medal in the 2016 and 2018 Hockey Champions Trophy.
Apart from this, he has also become a medal winner in the Commonwealth Games twice with Team India. But the biggest achievement of his career will be that he has made a huge contribution in getting medals for India in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics. Retiring after winning 2 consecutive Olympic medals reinforces Sreejesh’s greatness.
‘The Great Wall’
PR Sreejesh has been one of the best goalkeepers in the hockey world. Talking about Paris Olympics 2024, he has stopped the opposition team from scoring goals on many important occasions. In the bronze medal match against Spain, Spain got two penalty corners within the last 2 minutes, but Sreejesh stood firm like a rock. He did not let Spain score on either of the two occasions. Being an excellent goalkeeper, he is also known as ‘The Great Wall’ in hockey.
Bronze medal dedicated to Sreejesh
After the match, Sreejesh sat on top of the goal post and celebrated his historic and glorious career. Captain Harmanpreet Singh also took him around the field on his shoulders and showed respect to him. Meanwhile, after the match ended, in an interview, Manpreet Singh said that India’s bronze medal win is dedicated to PR Sreejesh, who has served the Indian hockey team for a very long time.
