When did the plan start
Prime Minister Modi started this scheme on 28 August 2014 during his first term. Under this scheme, the government wanted to connect the poor and rural people of the country to the banking system. For this, they were given the facility to open zero balance accounts. Under this scheme, the government has got a big help in providing the benefits of social security schemes to the people through direct bank transfer i.e. DBT. Through this, the money of government schemes reaches directly to the accounts of the people.
More than 53 crore accounts opened under the scheme
On completion of ten years of the scheme, a total of 53.13 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in the country. At present, there are a total of 53.13 crore Jan Dhan accounts in the country. There is about Rs 2.3 lakh crore lying in them. According to the Finance Ministry, about 80 percent of these accounts are active. Also, by August 2024, the average balance of such accounts has increased to Rs 4,352, which was just Rs 1,065 in March 2015. According to the Finance Minister, the government has set a target of opening 3 crore more Jan Dhan accounts in this financial year. Out of this, about 55.6 percent (29.56 crore) accounts are of women.
