Paris Olympics Seine River Swimmers Drink Coke: The polluted Seine River is being used for swimming events at the Paris Olympics 2024, raising health concerns among swimmers. For more than 100 years, swimming in the Seine River was banned due to the risk of falling ill due to bacteria and high E. coli levels. However, this time swimmers are allowed to swim in the river for triathlon and marathon swimming events at the Olympic Games.
Many swimmers are drinking cold drinks after swimming
To deal with these unique circumstances, some swimmers have adopted a unique method: drinking Coca-Cola. Yes, you read that right! Some Olympic swimmers believe that drinking Coca-Cola can help them avoid bacteria.
“The Coca-Cola myth is true,” Australian swimmer Moesha Johnson told the Wall Street Journal. “We drink it often enough to flush out any residue from our bodies.”
New Zealand triathlon athlete Ainsley Thorpe also supports this: “There is no harm in drinking Coca-Cola after a race. If you search it on Google, you will find out that it can be beneficial.”
Know what the doctor says?
However, doctors say that there is no scientific basis behind drinking Coca-Cola as a treatment for gastro-related problems. Dr. Maria Abreu, President of the American Gastroenterological Association, said – “These are young and fit athletes, whose digestive system is very strong. Drinking Coca-Cola will not have any significant effect on bacteria.”
Nevertheless, some athletes consume it to increase energy, as a can of Coca-Cola contains about 10 teaspoons of sugar, which can help restore energy. American Olympic athlete Katie Grimes said – “My coach advised me to drink Coca-Cola to quickly restore glycogen levels.”
