Pakistani Wrestler Stripped of Commonwealth Games Bronze Medal: Pakistani wrestler Ali Asad won a bronze medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. But now he has been found guilty of taking drugs that help an athlete perform better. The International Testing Agency (ITA) has confirmed in its report that this Pakistani wrestler had consumed drugs during the 2022 Commonwealth Games, due to which his bronze medal is being taken back from him.
Not only has Ali Asad’s medal been taken back, but he has also been banned for 4 years. This ban was imposed on Asad when he gave up his right to a hearing of the case and did not respond to the allegations within the stipulated time limit.
PTI quoted an ITA official as saying, “This incident highlights the big problem with sports in Pakistan. Wrestling and weightlifting in particular are not in a good condition. Many athletes from the country have been found guilty of doping in these sports.”
Four Pakistani athletes have already been banned
Talking about May this year, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) banned 4 Pakistani weightlifters after they were found guilty of doping. Two years before that, i.e. in 2022, Abdur Rehman, Sharjeel Butt, Ghulam Mustafa and Farhan Amjad were banned because they refused to give samples to the International Testing Agency (ITA) for testing. Those four athletes also knocked the door of the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), but the ban was not lifted even after the hearing.
At the same time, Talha Talib and Abu Bakar Ghani, two of the country’s top weightlifters, were also banned for two years for consuming banned drugs. Talha, who finished fifth at the Tokyo Olympics, is scheduled to have his suspension expire in February 2025.
