More than 1 lakh posts are vacant in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Assam Rifles (AR). This figure is till October 30 and after this there has been no significant improvement in the situation. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai gave information on this matter in Rajya Sabha. He said that as of September 30, the total deployed strength of CAPFs and ARs was 9,48,204, while the number of vacant posts is more than 1 lakh.
Nityanand Rai said that in the last 5 years, 71,231 new posts have been created in CAPF and AR, but the mental and physical pressure of the soldiers of these forces is also increasing. In these five years, 730 soldiers in CAPF, NSG and AR have committed suicide, which is a matter of concern. Its 47,891 employees have taken voluntary retirement and 7,664 have resigned. These figures indicate that there is a need to pay more attention to the mental health and working conditions of soldiers.
Nityanand Rai also said that the government is taking steps to fill the vacant posts quickly. These vacancies are arising due to retirement, resignation, promotion and death. The government has planned to improve and speed up various recruitment processes to fill these posts.
Details of vacancies in CAPF and AR
There are 33,730 vacancies in CRPF, 31,782 in CISF, 12,808 in BSF, 9,861 in ITBP, 8,646 in SSB and 3,377 in Assam Rifles. Priority is being given to the recruitment process to fill these posts.

However, the mental condition of the security forces personnel is also under question. 144 soldiers committed suicide in 2020, 157 in 2021, 138 in 2022 and 157 in 2023 also. So far in 2024, 134 soldiers have committed suicide. These figures show that there is a need to pay more attention to the mental health care of soldiers.
