Online fraud: A shocking case of online cheating has come to light in Bengaluru, where a 57 -year -old woman was cheated by just one phone call. The incident occurred on January 20, when the woman received an automated call, which looked like an interactive voice response (IVR) system of a nationalized bank. “SBI” showed on the caller ID, which matched the bank where the woman’s account was.
How did Online Fraud?
The woman received a recorded call, which said that 2 lakh rupees have been transferred from her account to another account. The call instructed that if they have done this transaction then press “3” and if not done then press “1”.
According to the victim, in the beginning she did not press any button, but the call was repeated several times, which caused her to confuse. He eventually pressed “1”, as he did not do any transaction. After this, another message came in the call – “Please go to your bank immediately and contact the manager.”
As soon as the call was cut, the woman examined her bank account and found that 2 lakh rupees had been debuted from her account. The panicked woman immediately reached the bank, where the manager advised them to file a complaint on the cybercrime helpline. Subsequently, he lodged a complaint at Girinagar police station.
What came out in police investigation?
According to officials investigating the matter, cyber criminals are now using new and advanced techniques for cheating. Usually, in such scams, fraudsters try to get bank account, card details or other sensitive information from the victim. But in this case the woman claimed that she did not share any such information.
According to a senior police officer, the woman may have shared some necessary information inadvertently or the thugs have discovered a new way to cheat. At present, the police is investigating the case in depth.
How to avoid online fraud
- Do not press any button on automated calls coming from unknown numbers.
- Ignore any suspicious calls related to the bank and contact the bank directly.
- Under any circumstances, do not give your bank account information, OTP or password to anyone.
- Find a complaint immediately on cybercrime helpline number 1930.
