There are many major educational institutions in India which have been created for the Muslim community. Some of these are central universities, some state universities and some are private institutions. Jamia Millia Islamia is a major central university among the institutions of Delhi region which was established in 1920. It got the status of Central University in 1988 and was given the status of Minority Institute in 2011. Muslim students get 50% reservation in admission here. Jamia Hamdard is also a famous institute in this area which specializes in Ayurveda and Unani medicine. It got the status of Honorary University in 1989 and its pharmacy education is quite famous.

Maulana Azad National Urdu University in Hyderabad in South India is an important central university named after the first Education Minister of India. It also has minority status and was the only Urdu University in India till 2016. The University of Osmania located in the same city is also a historical institution which was established in 1918 by the Nizam of Hyderabad. It was the first university in India where Urdu was the medium of education, although it is now considered a secular university.

Khaja Bandenwaz University, located in Gulbarga, Karnataka, is a relatively new institute which was established in 2018. It is named after the famous Sufi saint Bande Nawaz. It is a major center of Muslim education in West Bengal and operates under the autonomous model. Maulana Mazharul Haq Arabic and Persian University, located in Patna, was established in 1998 and specializes in Arabic and Persian languages. Mohammad Ali Johar University was established in 2006 and provides multi-disciplinary education. Maulana Azad University was established in Jodhpur, Rajasthan in 2013 and more than 8,000 students study here. The Islamic University of Science and Technology was established in Jammu and Kashmir in 2005 and it started teaching programs since 2006.

admission in these minority educational institutions is on the basis of merit on the basis of merit. 50 percent of the total seats are reserved for minority communities and 50 percent for other communities. Empty seats in minority quota can be filled with students from other communities.
