World Organ Donation 2024: ‘World Organ Donation 2024’ will be celebrated on 13 August this year as every year. On this occasion, we are going to present you a report. According to this report, huge gender inequality has been seen in organ donation as well. Let’s start when Lalu Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya donated a kidney for her 74-year-old father Lalu Prasad Yadav last year. It was compared to a great selfless love. He was even called a hero.
When we did some more research on this matter, we found out about a mother-in-law from Mumbai who donated one of her kidneys to her 43-year-old daughter-in-law. During this special research, names of many women came to light who donated organs to their relatives and family. We have seen in the teleshop show Film Aas Paas that if someone in the house needs an organ, then the woman of the house donates it smilingly.
We become emotional on seeing this. Because women are said to be goddess, embodiment of compassion and motherly love. When we remove emotions and think with logic, then a serious truth of society comes in front of us. Knowing this, you will definitely become a little uncomfortable for a moment. According to a recent research, gender inequality in organ donation is not only in India but all over the world.
According to the report of National Organ and Cell Transplant Organization (NOTTO)
According to the National Organ and Cell Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), organ transplants in India are set to increase from 4,990 in 2013 to 16,041 in 2022. This is still a small proportion of the country’s population of over 1.4 billion. Of these, the number of deceased donors is not even slightly higher than the number of living donors. And among these living organ donors, women outnumber men.
Gender disparity in organ donation
In recent times, various hospitals and state-level organisations in India have come up with data about gender disparity in organ donation. In Bihar, the home state of Lalu Prasad Yadav, out of the total 170 kidney transplants reported in the state since 2016, more than 120 were donated by women for their loved ones, while only 50 were donated by men.
Several media reports from metro cities like New Delhi and Mumbai have quoted doctors as saying that there is a gender disparity between female organ donors and male organ recipients. This also impacts gender-based inequalities in access to transplants for women.
Women with kidney disease are less likely to be referred for transplant evaluation and therefore receive a kidney transplant, and yet they make up the majority of living kidney donors, according to a report published in 2021 in the Lippincott Williams & Wilkins journal.
What is the reason that women donate organs more than men?
Why do women donate organs more than men? There could be many reasons and hypotheses for this. According to a 2022 article in the National Medical Journal of India, economic implications, a sense of self-sacrifice in women, as well as gender bias in institutions or experts through communication could be reasons why more women become living donors. Be it mothers, wives, daughters or sisters.
The impact of a patriarchal society
According to liver transplant specialist Dr Ankur Garg, there is no debate that gender disparity exists in living organ donation. A large part of it is due to the mindset of our society and to some extent, the fact that it is a patriarchal society. More men suffer from alcoholic liver disease and alcoholism is more common among men, and wives tend to become donors, Dr Garg told Health Shots.
Women are greatly influenced by their home and society
Our social mindset is such that in our society, women are often seen as the caretakers and nurturers of the family, relatives and people around them. They are considered the epitome of compassion and sacrifice. In our society, women are brought up in such a way that they are first taught to live for others.
