Gangs of cunning people cheat people by adopting various tricks. Innocent people often fall prey to their trap and lose their hard-earned money. A similar fraud is going on in the market in the name of installing mobile towers, about which the telecom regulator TRAI has alerted people.
SMS sent to people by TRAI
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has alerted people through SMS about the fraud happening in the name of mobile towers. The SMS being sent by TRAI states that no NOC is given by them. TRAI’s SMS is- Keep in mind that TRAI does not issue NOC for installing mobile towers. If someone fraudulently contacts you with such a letter, then this matter can be reported to the concerned mobile service provider.
PIB Fact Check had also cautioned
Earlier this month, PIB Fact Check had also warned people about mobile tower installation fraud. PIB Fact Check had said that people are being given fake NOCs in the name of the Department of Telecommunications for mobile tower installation and are being duped of money in return. PIB Fact Check had said that the Department of Telecommunications does not charge any fee or tax for the installation of mobile towers.
This is the modus operandi of tower fraud
In fact, people are deceived in the name of mobile towers that they will start earning every month by installing a tower on their land or roof. In return for the tower, they will get a fixed amount every month in addition to a lump sum amount. Innocent people get lured by this. Then they are given a fake NOC in the name of TRAI or Telecom Department and money is extorted from them in return.
Fraud in the name of mobile number verification
TRAI had also alerted people about mobile number verification fraud some time back. It had said that it never sends any message or call to report verification/disconnection/illegal activities of mobile numbers. Beware of such messages/calls coming in the name of TRAI. Any such call or message should be considered potentially fraudulent and can be reported to the Department of Telecommunications through the Chakshu module on the Sanchar Saathi platform (https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc/) or to the Home Ministry’s cyber crime portal https://www.cybercrime.gov.in.
