SIM Card Rules: The government has once again changed the rules for mobile numbers, which are for foreign citizens. These new rules are going to make it easier for foreign citizens to buy SIM cards in India. Earlier it used to be that foreigners needed an OTP from a local number to buy Airtel, Jio and Vi SIM, but now this will not happen.
According to the new rule, now foreign citizens can receive OTP on their email. This means that they will not need a local number to buy a SIM card. Now it has been made optional. That means if they want, they can use email to receive OTP.
EKYC is mandatory for Indian users
A new rule was announced for the citizens of the country a few days ago, in which it has been made mandatory for Indian users to verify EKYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) to buy a new SIM card. That is, without EKYC verification, users will not be able to buy a mobile number.
E-KYC is a digital verification process in which a user’s identity and address is verified electronically. Now the government has taken a strict stand on this and has said that SIM cards will not be issued without EKYC verification.
This is the reason behind getting EKYC done
The government has done this so that cyber fraud and scams that are done using SIM cards can be stopped through EKYC. Earlier, people used to buy SIM cards in someone’s name without EKYC and then misuse the number, but now after the introduction of EKYC, this will not happen.
