Due to differences with her husband, Meena had developed the habit of drinking and this habit became the cause of her death. He was suffering from liver cirrhosis. Due to this, he died in 1972 at the age of 38.

Rinki Roy Bhattacharya, daughter of director Bimal Roy, had once revealed in an interview given to Rediff that after the death of Meena Kumari, she did not have even Rs 3500 in her account. The financial condition of his family was very bad.
The hospital doctor helped
Meena Kumari died in St. Elizabeth Nursing Home. When his family could not pay the money to the hospital, a doctor of the hospital helped him. The doctor was also a fan of Meena. After this, the body of the actress was handed over to the family for cremation.
