Mala Sinha and Sharmila Tagore both played important roles in the film Humsaaya (1968). According to a report by Bollywood Shaadis, both were popular actresses in the industry at that time. There was a lot of competition between them. There were reports that the tension between the two started during the shooting of the film Daag and it increased during the shooting of Humsaaya.
There were reports that Mala allegedly slapped Sharmila during a scene, due to which Joy Mukherjee had to wrap the sequence. This incident between them was widely reported. However, Mala later completely denied it.
